Hands-down, Chris is the best BMW mechanic , PERIOD. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable, he knows how to run a business. He is friendly, professional, affordable, honest and all around a pleasure to have as a mechanic. I am very close to my car and would have no-one else diagnose and repair it besides Chris' shop. When I first met Chris, his love of BMWs and fixing cars was very apparent. The first car I took to German Auto Sport was, at the time, my soon-to-be first Bimmer and after reading the yelp reviews, I decided to take it to Chris. I was more than impressed. He spent a good amount of time not only telling me about my car, but what to expect owning it. I am very pleased that I not only bought this wonderful car, but that I have found an AWESOME mechanic to help me care for it. Chris doesn't candy-coat things, which I appreciate. Car problems happen. Occasionally I have had the experience where a mechanic assumed I would know nothing about what was wrong and would break down the repair terms into almost baby-talk and occasionally trying to take advantage of me. This is not so with Chris. He tells you what is wrong, but is very skilled at giving you more info, if you need it and without making you feel stupid -- because hey, maybe you are no car expert, but that doesn't make you a moron. He always seems to go above and beyond and will do all he can to find the best parts, and have the best approach to fixing it. Not only is he a very skilled mechanic, he is a very caring for his customers. I cannot be more happy with this shop. Chris, his wife, and staff are all very pleasant, smart, and super awesome people. Someone give this man a medal. He rocks. I will go to nobody else.

THIS PLACE ROCKS!!! I wouldn't take my BMW E36 M3 anywhere else. Before I left L.A. last summer I asked my mechanic of 15 years if he knew of anyone in Nor Cal. Without a hesitation he said "Chris at Berkeley German Auto". And that was it until my plastic OEM radiator cracked In Emeryville. That Sunday evening I parked my car in front and put my keys in the drop box. I was scared to H**L who these people were and what they were gonna do to my Baby. Early that next morning my fears were exchanged with smiles as Chris( the owner) introduced himself, explained to me what had gone wrong, that it was a common problem, how much it would cost, which parts he recommended, and why. A few hours later my car was ready and best of all less than he expected. Since then I have counted on Chris & German Auto for all of my repairs and upgrades. And they have responded with Honest, Affordable, Excellent work. Best of all Chris takes the time to explain everything in detail sometimes even drawing pictures. His artwork isn't so hot. J.K. But he gets it. No one like paying for stuff they do not understand. So he takes the time. Also worth noting is they are just a few blocks from the shops on 4th street so you have something to do while your car is being worked on. Thanx Chris & Staff

I'm so glad I was able to bring my 97 740iL to Chris for it's overheating problem. After getting the estimate from the dealer, he was almost half of what they wanted, and he had my car ready the next day, where the dealer made me feel like they were doing me a favor by having it ready in a week. Tell me that wouldn't make you smile. I wish he fixed motorcycles there, my BMW bike could use a service.

After 20 years of driving VW's and BMW's I've FINALLY found a mechanic that I can trust! Honest, dependable, and reasonable and they don't BS you, unlike Concord BMW. Chris is great and so is Sharyar I take my BMW 528e there. Highly recommended if you drive a BMW. They are straight up honest.

these guys time and time again provide 5 star service! they are the most knowledgeable group of mechanics i have ever interacted with. that's saying a lot because i used to be an office manager for a mechanic. i have never felt like i was being like i was being swindled or being taken for a ride. in fact, they try to make sure you do not spend more money than you need to fix your ride. they are really easy to talk to and really responsive to your needs and situation. i told myself that if something ever happened to my '85 bmw i would buy another one just so i can still use these guys for my mechanics.

OK, so I heard that ownership had changed and was worried because I have been going here on and off for many years. But, I went in and the same patient guy (don't know his name) helped me as always and gave out valuable information freely as usual - they are really into helping you fix your car yourself here. This is THE place to go for parts if you have an '80's VW like me. Anywhere else will charge you up the butt AND give you attitude at the same time. Last time I brought my rabbit pickup in, the mechanic made her run like a racehorse - don't know how! On the downside, repairs aren't cheap and they're nowhere near a BART station which is why I have been trying out San Francisco mechanics here and there. Sometimes I just don't have time for the 45 minute walk, 45 minute BART ride, MUNI ride, etc.

I'd give this place 10 stars If I could. If you have a VW, this is your spot. (they also do Audis and Bimmers, but that's it). I have an '86 Jetta GLi which needs occasional love and attention, and when I can't fix it myself, I bring it here. When I can fix it myself, this is where I come for parts: new, used, or aftermarket. The prices are great, and they guys there will take the time to talk to you, help you figure out your problem, sell you the parts, and show you how to put them in. I buy my oil filters here, always pay $5 cash, and get a free drain plug washer. I bought a coolant overflow reservoir there, it failed within a year, I brought it back, and they replaced it for free. It's just so rare to find mechanics and parts guys this knowledgable, this passionate, and this honest. And at a great price. If I ever move away from Berkeley, this will probably be the place I miss the most. They also have some great mechanics and have been expanding their service department over the past few years. Just last week, one of my rear wheel bearings went. They scheduled me for the next day and had the car done by 4. And, when I dropped it off, Walt (the service manager, I think) offered to drop me off anywhere in Berkeley. This is car repair like it should be done. They respect cars, respect customers, and respect their customers wallets.(I've been a customer for 7 years)
