The city of Berkeley covers more than 10 square miles of land along the east shore of San Francisco Bay, home to a population of some 122,000 people. Incorporated in 1878, it’s named after the 18th-century Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley.
Berkeley grew after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and again after World War II. In the 1960s, UC Berkeley became known for championing the civil rights movement and free speech. Berkeley’s importance as a center of cultural diversity and environmentalism has endured to this day. Ethnic restaurants of practically any heritage can be found here, while recreational activities are varied, from beach walks and dedicated bike lanes, to hikes in regional parks.
