Oakland, CA
As the seat of Alameda County and a major port center, Oakland is the third largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and the eighth most populated city in California. Incorporated in 1852, Oakland covers almost 56 square miles of land, home to more than 425,000 residents.
Oakland expanded during the 1920s with a growing population of automobile factory workers. The city grew again during World War II with the building of more than 100 ships. After decades of change and decline, large urban renewal projects got underway in the 1990s, concentrated in the downtown area and around the port. Oakland today is one of the country’s most ethnically diverse major cities, while claiming the highest concentration of artists in the nation.
