Piedmont, CA
The small, residential city of Piedmont, CA, is located in Alameda County, completely surrounded by the city of Oakland. Incorporated in 1907, Piedmont covers 1.7 square miles of land with a population of more than 11,000 residents.
In the 1920s Piedmont became known as “The City of Millionaires” for supposedly housing the largest number of wealthy individuals per square mile in the entire country, many of whom built mansions that stand to this day. The city is now zoned almost entirely for single-family residences, leaving Piedmont with minimal commerce. Even with Oakland’s resources nearby, Piedmont provides its own fire, police, parks and recreational services. The community is home to several notable individuals in the political, business, sports and academic worlds.
